Chapter 2
Mr Earnshaw died
Time passed, and Mt Earnshaw's health began to fail.Hindley wentaway to study,
and I hoped that now wshould have some peace in the house. But there was no peace
Catherine. She was the wildest child I ever saw.She was always full of life-singing,
laughing, talking.Fifty times a day she was in trouble. She seemed to enjoy making us
angry with her bad behaviour. But she had the prettiest eyes, and the sweetest smile,
and I don't believe she really meant to do any harm . she was much too fond of
Heathcliff. The greatest punishment that we could give her was to keep her away
from him.She loved to play a game with him in wich she was the mistress and he was
the servant. She gave orders, and he ran about to obey them.Mr Earnshaw was
a serious man and he didn't understand children's games. When he saw Catherine
ordering Heathcliff about he grew very angry. The hour came at last that ended Mr
Earnshaw's troubles on earth . One October evening in his chair by the fire.
Catherine was sitting at his feet. Mr Earnshaw touched her pretty hair "why can't
you always be a good girl Cathy ?" he said . She turned her face up to his face and
laughed." Why can't you always be a good man father?" she answered. But when
she saw him angry again, she kissed his hand, and she would sing him to sleep.
She began singing very softly, till his fingers dropped from hers, and his head fell
on his breast. Then I told her it was time to go up for prayers and bed ." I shall say
goodnight to father first" said Catherine, putting her arms around his neck .And then
she gave a loud cry. "Oh, he's dead,Heathcliff! He's dead!" Both children began to
cry in wild grief. Mr Earshaw was buried three days later. Hindely came home for the funeral and surprised us
very much by bringing a wife, Frances, with him.
Frances seemed a pleasant young woman but , but also rather silly. The preparations for the funeral troubled her.
She began weeping, and I asked her what the matter was. " I feel so afraid of dying!" she cried. She was a thin
girl, with very bright eyes climbing the stairs made her breathless, and she often coughed. Mr Hindely had
changed a lot in three years. He spoke and dressed quite differently, and considered himself a real gentleman.
He was the master of the house now, and could treat Heathcliff just as he liked. He made the boy sit with the
servants instead of with the family; he stopped his lessons with the vicar, and set him to work on the farm
instead. Heathcliff didn't mind the change at first, because Catherine taught him what she learnt, and worked or
played with him in the fields. They were both wild, rough-mannered children at this time. The young master often
ordered then to be punished. It was one of their chief amusements to run away to the moors in the morning and
remain there all day; the punishment wich followed was only something to laugh at. They forgot everything the
moment they were together again.
