My favorite movies
Una cena quasi perfetta - The last supper [Stacy Title, 1995]
A quintet of young friends of the radical left U.S. invites to dinner a trucker who reveals a sinister nationalist, fascist and violent. One of the protagonists kills him in self defense. Digested remorse and buried the corpse in the garden, the five begin to invite todinner and kill the worst reactionaries who they meet in order to "improve" the world. But at the end, their game turns against them and it's
Written by Dan Rosen, is a culinary-political black comedy. The characters are represented with a pungent irony and the logic with which they "justify" their murders is insane, a bit weird but funny.
I girasoli [Vittorio de Sica, 1970]
The protagonist is the Italian Giovanna (Sophia Loren), who goes to Russia in search of her husband who was lost in war. She finds her lover Antonio (Marcello Mastroianni) in Ukraine where he has formed a new family. Desperate and disappointed she went back to Italy and moved to Milan, where she met a man with whom she had a new family. But Antonio can't forget her and their meeting so he returned to Italy to find her and explain what happened in those years. They talked and realized that they were still in love. But they didn't want to hurt their respective families and so Antonio took the train back to Russia and this time it was goodbye forever.
A poignant story about how sometimes love can be stifled and repressed because of an error or simply because of a destiny that moves away from another.
Arancia Meccanica - A clockwork Orange [Stanley Kubrick, 1971]
The protagonist is Alex, a boy who makes robberies, rapes andmurders without remorse. Headed by a band of villains called "Drug". After using violence to the wife of a writer, he was arrested. In order to be issued, he accepts the "Ludovico treatment", which consisted of watching scenes ofviolence on a large screen, accompanied by the Beethoven Ninth Symphony. When he comes back to home, he discovers that parents have sublet his room. Without the ability to react (caused by the "Ludovico Treatment"), he undergoes much injustice and violence. Alex attempted suicide and in the hospital he receives a courtesy visit by the prime minister. This is a brilliant film that includes different kinds of movie, a movie that shows violence to be a counter-manifesto. The ambiguity of character was required to show the violence of several medical, police, politics and the public. Excess and amplification are keywords in this movie. When Alex heals (with the "Ludovico treatment"), he can no longer choose nor to commit violence or react to violence. He becameobedient not because he has voluntarily decided but cause of a kind of "allergy" (he feels nauseous when he tries to use violence, even if he tries to defend himself). The music of Beethoven and Rossini reworked by Walter Carlos are wonderful. Another important aspect of the film is that music is always either in harmony or in total contrast to the scenes.
Another brilliant idea by Kubrick.
Il grande dittatore - The great dictator [Charlie Chaplin, 1940]
This is the first film in which Charlie Chaplin speaks. "The Great Dictator" talks about human folly, the pain of men, farce, tragedy, history of oppressed people, always unjust war. Charlie Chaplin was incredibly brave to make a film of this kind in 1940, when in Europe there was World War II and Hitler was incredibly strong. In fact this film is a great satire of Nazism and takes aim directly Adolf Hitler and the Nazi movement in Germany. Human stupidity knows no bounds, but the strength to fight despite his wounds, the desire to change our lives and our future should not leave us ever.
Charlie Chaplin: genius undisputed timeless and limitless.
La finestra sul cortile - Rear Window [Alfred Hitchcock, 1954]
The protagonist is the photojournalist Jefferies, which is immobilized at home because of a cast. Jefferies spends his time looking out the window of his apartment to scrutinize the habits of neighbors. Among these, there is a pair of newlyweds, a pretty young dancer, a pianist haunted by failure, a married couple with a dog sleeping in the open, a woman crushed by loneliness and, above all, a quiet middle- age man that takes care of his sick wife. When she suddenly disappears, Jefferies begins to spy on the man's obsessive behavior, convinced that a murder has occurred in that apartment.
Wonderful movie, amazing cast. Then the scenery, the wonderfuljazz (modern and suited to the theme of the film) and the beauty of the idea of microcosm courtyard-building with a set of excellent choice of color (very '50s) and the masterpiece is done.
